JSTS, in partnership with our Platinum Sponsor B3 Bicycles, is hosting a course on Road Riding Skills.

It's an unfortunate truth that most of us purchase our first road bike and immediately go out to see how fast and/or how far we can ride it, without ever really taking the necessary time to get a firm grip on certain essential skills. These skills will make you more comfortable and confident on your bike, relieving much of the anxiety that can hinder your enjoyment of riding - and even sometimes prevent you from riding! If any of the questions below have a ring of truth about them for you, then this event will be useful for you.

  • Are you reluctant to raise your saddle to the proper height because doing so will prevent your feet from touching the ground when your tush is in the saddle?
  • Do you teeter precariously and uncomfortably in your saddle when you come to a stop sign?
  • Do you have a difficult time getting your bike moving from a seated position?
  • Do you feel nervous about being able to stop and unclip at intersections?
  • Are you anything less than a portrait of perfect grace when you stop and put your foot down at intersections?
  • Does cornering in a group or at high speeds scare you?
  • In what space of the road, exactly, are cyclists supposed to ride?
  • Have you ever wanted to learn to do a wheelie for 3 miles straight?
  • Eating and drinking while riding. A skill worth mastering for so many reasons.
  • A brief explanation of cadence, heart rate, and power; and how the three can be useful individually or together. This is not an in-depth scientific conversation, but folks who have yet to dive down the in-depth-scientific-rabbit-hole and just want a basic explanation of what it all means will get their time's worth out of it.
  • Do you have questions about group ride safety, skills, or etiquette? If there's time, we'll try to answer them too.

Program runs from 6 - 7:15pm. We'll cover as much of these topics as we have time to. If we don't get to everything, we will save the rest for another event in the near future.

Once again, this event is limited to 30 people. If the weather is dry, feel free to bring your bike so you can practice certain skills in the parking lot along with me. If the weather is wet, we will try to provide bikes for a limited amount of practice in the store.
