MTB Park Descriptions

JSTS Mountain Bike (MTB) Rides are leader-led rides that typically last anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 hours. The ride leader tries to keep everyone together, with regrouping at intersections as needed. Large groups may be split based on ability.

We welcome riders of all abilities, and are happy provide extra assistance to those that might be newer to MTB riding. Most of the parks we ride at have varying terrain that can accommodate those of varying abilities.  Here is a brief description of the most common parks we ride at.  If a park is not listed here, please reach out to the ride leader for more information about the park.

    • Allaire State Park - We do most of our rides at Allaire State Park and it is suitable for all MTB riders. There is a lot of single-track and some moderate climbs, but not too much technical. This park has the best drainage of any park in our area, so we often move rides to this location after heavy rains.
    • Clayton Park - Lots of single track with some long climbs and sections that are more technical. Not ideal for brand new MTB riders unless you are feeling adventurous.
    • Hartshorne Woods - Lots of single track and technical challenges. Rooty and rocky climbs and decents. Not recommended for novice riders. It is rideable by intermediate riders, but you should be prepared to walk on some of the more challenging climbs and descents (we always regroup after the challenging sections). Riding at Hartshorne is sometimes combined with riding at Huber Woods (there is a short ride on the road to get from one park to the other).
    • Huber Woods - Similar to Hartshorne but smaller, with lots of single track and technical challenges. Rooty and rocky climbs and decents. Not recommended for novice riders. It is rideable by intermediate riders, but you should be prepared to walk on some of the more challenging climbs and descents (we always regroup after the challenging sections). Riding at Huber Woods is often combined with riding at Hartshorne Woods (there is a short ride on the road to get from one park to the other).
    • Six Mile Run - Long single track loop. Not much climbing, but gets slippery when wet. Start is twisty single track through tall trees then open fields that include two wooden ramps; not difficult but different. If the hard pack red clay gets wet, your bike and clothes will be red forever. We typically only go here when the ground is frozen and dry.
    • Tatum Park - Primarily double-track around fields and meadows. This is the least technical park we ride at. There is a small section of single-track, and a couple of long climbs. Nothing that cannot be walked up if necessary.
